INCIDENTAL SUN EXPOSURE ... IGNORANCE IS NOT BLISS - By Kathy Fields, MD

Did you know that 80% of total lifetime sun exposure is incidental? This statistic from the Sun Safety Alliance is surprising to most because few intend to "tan" as they walk the dog, drive to work or grab lunch at an outdoor café. The unfortunate reality is that, on average, all this daily incidental sun exposure adds up to two full weeks of baking in the sun.

As someone who is passionate about sun protection, here's what I do to have maximum protection against incidental sun exposure and the associated aging effects on my skin:

1. Tinted Windows: I can always tell people who spend a lot of time in their cars ... they are more aged on the driving side of their body (face and arm) than the other. This is because as you drive, sun penetrates through car window glass and ages your skin. My car windows all have the maximum tint allowed by California state law. This is an investment that will pay dividends for years to come.
2. Don't "Let the Sunshine In": I enjoy natural lighting as much as anyone but UV rays are part of natural light. My office has gorgeous views that my patients rarely see because if the blinds are open all day, that is eight straight hours of direct sun exposure for me. If the blinds are open, make sure you are sufficiently protected or, better yet, leverage advances in artificial light to create a similar ambiance without the UV rays.
3. Sport a Broad-Brimmed Hat: Whether I am walking to the mailbox or shopping at the farmers market, I always wear a broad-brimmed hat in addition to my SPF for complete protection. Totally en vogue, you can find great options everywhere. Just remember, you want to find a hat with a full broad brim; standard baseball caps and visors won't protect the lower parts of your face, leaving you with uneven skin tone and wrinkling.
4. Wear Protective Clothing: Whenever possible I opt for long sleeves and clothing with SPF in it. Fortunately, fashions in this category have improved greatly and you can now find some fun shirts and shorts with SPF in the fabric. Protecting your skin with clothing can add sun protection equivalent to up to SPF 10, depending on the thickness of your clothes.

My R+F Business Story

Upon returning from a trip to Hawaii, I noticed that along with my tan, I had a face full of brown spots. At the time I worked for a reputable skincare line, but unfortunately their products did not offer me any real solutions to my problem. That’s when a friend introduced me to the REVERSE line by Rodan + Fields.
